City doc gets 5-yr jail for ‘harassing’ woman in Saudi

A doctor from Bengaluru employed in
Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to five years imprisonment and has been imposed
a fine of 1.5 lakh Riyals (around Rs 33.4 lakh), by a Saudi Arabian court for
allegedly harassing a woman.
The doctor was working as a
pathologist in Jizan province in Saudi Arabia and was convicted for harassing a
young Saudi national woman who was doing her internship under him, diplomatic
sources at Indian Consulate in Jeddah told Salar News. The woman lodged a
complaint after which public prosecution referred the case to criminal court
which awarded him the sentence.
A native of Devagiri in Haveri
district, the doctor was showing a sample on a microscope when he accidentally
touched the woman’s hand, the sources said.
The doctor’s family has approached
Indian diplomatic mission and said it was a case of misunderstanding. .—Salar
